Timing is everything, particularly in the case of amazing photography. Sometimes that means waiting through a whole sports game and getting lucky to catch just the right shot. Other times than means trudging through nature for weeks to get the perfect environmental photograph. Here are 25 examples of perfectly timed images from around the world and in various genres.

With extreme sports it is the danger and challenge that tends to excite people. Often the most amazing and bizarre images are taken right at the moment when disaster strikes. Sometimes these are tragic and painful though some are just plain funny.

27

15

With conventional sports there is always the opportunity for comedy but also the potential for artful photography. The spray of sand during a long-jump or that moment before the splash when someone is diving both provide a moment of calm in a fast-paced sport that is normally impossible to see.

17

9

In war it is often hard to find or revel in humor or traditional beauty. Instead, it is often the images that capture grave or impressive moments in time that stir us most deeply. This can come in the form of a rocket frozen in space or the geometry of a cloud of smoke from a tank.

12

With people comedy tends to be the rule and other things the exception. Humans tend to be at their most interesting when they are at their funniest. Whether this means a young man falling into a fountain or an old woman riding a sled, it’s worth keeping your eyes open in public places for the perfect shot!

Nature images truly span the spectrum of artistic possibility. Sometimes animals are funny, sometimes scary, often tragic and sometimes downright strange. Whether they be shot in a conventional park or bedroom or taken deep in the wilds, environmental images taken at just the right time can provide unique insights into nature and the relationship of humans and animals. Just wanted to note, as a commander in the artillery, who’s constantly bothered by the misidentification; thats a howitzer, not a tank!

Otherwise an awesome photo though, and I’ve seen (and taken) a lot.

  4. on 02 Nov 2007 at 4:45 pmEric

That last one is a fake. I know the source material for the cat in that position.

not only is the picture of a tank, not a tank, but that’s also not a “rocket frozen in space”, but rather a missile. quite an important distinction to anyone who’s ever used the javelin system.

  87. on 05 Nov 2007 at 6:30 amzsolt

Most of them are not only about the ability of the photographer who can catch the moment perfectly. It`s more about using a high-end digital SLR camera, which capable of shooting 30-40 images in a row, with 5-9 frame/sec. Whith a camera like this you can make 40 pictures of the same moment and choose the best too…

But the images are very nice ideed. thanks!

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/cover/galleries/covers/ali/072699/ali072699med.jpg

Muhammed Ali was in this victorious stance for less than 1/10 of second, but the photographer, Phil Taylor (??) captured it perfectly. If you watched the fight on TV or saw a video, you wondered when the picture was taken, because it’s such a fleeting moment

Entertaining, but as a serious photographer I think it does matter if some are photoshopped. This site appeared in national news sources and thus should have a bit of credibility (well, it should…). I’d like to see only the ‘real’ ones on the list. Have another list of well-edited photos somewhere, but not on this list.

  136. on 09 Nov 2007 at 10:53 pmNina

The bird bath pic has to be photoshopped. There is no way to get the stop action we see in the water, using a fast shutter speed, along with a blurred image of the bird’s head.

  138. on 09 Nov 2007 at 10:59 pmScotch

Decent Photoshop work by someone. Why would anybody bring a cat to a hotel room and be jumping on the bed with it? The cat about to land in the water…jumping from where? And the photographer just happened to be in a nearby boat to get the shot? The Great White shark about to eat the baby seal in mid-air? C’mon guys!! I make a living with Photoshop. You can’t believe anything you see in print anymore. Many of these shots are a prime example of that.

  139. on 09 Nov 2007 at 11:05 pmchoc

If you are going to allege that a photo is fake because you know the “source material,” please provide a link. The burden of proof is on the accuser.

  140. on 09 Nov 2007 at 11:30 pmEP

I agree with #83. The picture with the lightning and fireworks is definitely Denver. You can clearly see Coors Field structures in the left-hand side of the photograph.

  144. on 09 Nov 2007 at 11:48 pmJim

Another comment stated that the last one (the cat). Something certainly looks “not right” about it. I doubt this actually happened.

Reply #107, Scarlett: Don’t get your knickers in such a gather, missy. People are not ruining the photos for ANYONE by pointing out how some are blatently Photoshopped. You will have already SEEN all the photos, and if you do not bother to read everyone’s comments, you will not know that some are fakes. And if you Do read the comments, then you will learn that some are fakes. Stop presuming that the rest of the world gets as offended as you over non-issues. If you don’t want to have something picked apart, then don’t read the posted comments…just that simple.

The 2 military shots are from 2 HD Television shows “Firepower”. They are not real photographs but more of a still frame in a high definition video. Still cool…

    Re: #13 Kiel

“the lightning and firework pic was taken in oklahoma city, i woud recognize my cities skyline anywhere.”

Try again. The building with the obnoxious blue sign on the top? Qwest building, in Denver. Also, on the left, that’s COORS FIELD. You can clearly see the Colorado Rockies logo.

Unless you guys somehow moved not only one of the tallest buildings in Denver, but also our major league ballpark, you’re sadly mistaken.

  151. on 10 Nov 2007 at 12:50 amBluelineGoddess

#13 - You obviously *don’t* know your skyline very well, since that’s Denver. Qwest building on the right, one of Denver’s tallest buildings? Check. COORS FIELD on the left? Check.

Unless OKC stole these two VERY integral structures from Denver, I’d say you need to brush up a bit on your city.

  152. on 10 Nov 2007 at 1:03 amDarron

Fireworks/Lightning pic is DEFINITELY NOT Oklahoma City. It’s Denver as was mentioned by Eric above.

  156. on 10 Nov 2007 at 11:33 amtonnie

ok, where is my comment? afraid to put up technical information that proves a pic is a fake? as i said before, the bird pic is photoshopped…shutter speed was fast enough to catch the water droplets, but not to keep the head from looking like a photoshop swirlee? come one ppl, don’t be so gullible…it makes the rest of us look stupid….

  157. on 10 Nov 2007 at 11:35 amtonnie

downright embarassing as well that a news site linked to such obvious forgeries; what has our country come to when everyone is so technically ‘advanced’, but sooo naive? sad…

  158. on 10 Nov 2007 at 12:10 pmPaul O

I say the fireworks/lightning pic is fake.
    1. It’s an easy PS job that looks cool.
    2. No fireworks display company or fire marshal in their right mind would let a company setup a fireworks launch site and operate it in a lightning storm.

I can’t believe these photos weren’t checked out before this story was printed. HELLO…there is some obvious photoshopping here!!!!!

  167. on 10 Nov 2007 at 7:11 pmtonnie

the reason ppl are criticizing the fake photos is because they are being put forth as legitimate photos; not merely as ‘cute pics’…..if you plagiarized a hilarious story, would you expect everyone to love it and disregard the fact that you did not indeed write the crafty story although you presented it as your own work and intended to receive praise? use your brain…..

  168. on 10 Nov 2007 at 7:14 pmtonnie

i find it rather amusing that ppl who know absolutely nothing about a subject somehow feel qualified to enter into a debate of sorts in the same subject…i would not even begin to ‘explain’ or ‘correct’ any work done by an airline pilot; why would someone who knows nothing beyond where to put the batteries and how to fire the cam put up a fuss in the defense of such forgeries?LOL..

As a professional photographer I can tell that many of these pictures are fake. The reason it matters is that the headline is misleading. If it just said “cool photos to make you look twice” or something like that, it would be fine. But most of these are NOT “taken at the right time”

As a long-time photojournalist I believe it is of the utmost importance to point out fake photos that are purported to be real so that the amazing REAL photos can be believed.

There’s no reason to expect that the fireworks/lightning photo is fake. The usual way to photograph either is with a time exposure.

Taking many shots and picking the best isn’t new with digital photography. There’s a good chance that the photo of Muhammad Ali was one of a sequence taken on film at three frames per second.
