Thought-controlled computer games
Jul 20th, 2008 by admin

The world’s first thought-controlled computer game could be launched by the end of the year.
A new headset being developed by an Australian company may soon replace joysticks and Wii handles.
The EPOC headset has 16 sensors which measure electrical activity in the brain, allowing players to push and pull objects on a screen just by thinking.
Despite scepticism among some experts, Emotiv - the Sydney-based company behind the headset - claims it has carried out pre-release tests which show that the electroencephalography process works.
Emotiv co-founders Allan Snyder, a neuroscientist and former Cambridge University research fellow, and Tan Le are confident the technology can take gaming from the Wii to the next stage.
Tan Le said: ‘This is the tip of the iceberg. There will be a convergence of gesture-based technology and the brain as a new interface - the Holy Grail is the mind.’
The theory behind the headset was predicted by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata at the video games industry’s annual E3 conference.
He said: ‘As soon as we think something in our brain, it will appear within a video game. You’ll probably need to wear a kind of hat or helmet or something.’

This is a logical extension to existing gesture based systems from companies like GertureTek and of course the Nintendo Wii. It may be some time before this kind of input device is particular usable beyond gaming, but it’s great to see Emotiv moving the ball downfield…
..do i need to be bald to use it
Great news.It will be fun.I wonder if something could happen which will make game play more real.Such as the effects of game can be felt on our body by wearing a jacket or somthing.Obviously a lot of sensors will be required for this.Any way nice share.
nice one
Toys like these will be common place soon. The advances in technology will be amazing. Kids are going to rot on the couch in the coming years. What would be cool is using this in a large room where you can roam while playing. Similar to a holodeck from Star Trek.
To me it’s just another input device that uses the electrical field of the brain, not thought itself. As with biofeedback devices of the 70’s and 80’s the brain will be trained to produce the desired effect, not the game learning what the brain wants to happen.
Myself and others created actual thought controlled computer programs in the 80’s. You create a random number generator computer program, then have the output display one way or another based on how you think. No direct connection between the brain field and the microprocessor. By the way results were fleeting if non-existant.
Thank, for the nice article and information!
w the article is old, but some of those unique toys are really cool. It’s hard to find toys lik
