Suriya's 'Retro' Struggles at Tamil Nadu Box Office Despite High Expectations

Suriya's latest film "Retro," an action drama directed by Karthik Subbaraj and co-starring Pooja Hegde, is experiencing disappointing box office returns in Tamil Nadu. The film, which was anticipated to be Suriya's comeback project, has failed to meet expectations since its May 1st release.

According to industry reports, "Retro" grossed only Rs 5.75 crore on its first Sunday (Day 4), bringing its opening weekend total to approximately Rs 32.50 crore in Tamil Nadu. The film has shown concerning performance trends with continuous drops in revenue.

This box office disappointment continues Suriya's recent streak of underperforming films, especially in comparison to competing releases like "Tourist Family" starring Nani.

Meanwhile, Suriya has addressed the frequent comparisons made between him and his brother Karthi, who also enjoys a prominent career in Tamil cinema. The actor acknowledged their different styles, stating, "I can't be Karthi, can't do Meiyazhagan," referring to one of Karthi's roles that Suriya believes he couldn't replicate.

"Retro" was jointly produced by 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Creations, with industry watchers now considering the film's future prospects uncertain.
