Metropolitan Museum of Art Hosts 2025 Met Gala Celebrating Black Style and Fashion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosted the highly anticipated 2025 Met Gala on May 5, centering around the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" with a dress code of "Tailored for You." The prestigious event celebrated the opening of the museum's new exhibition of the same name, which explores three centuries of Black menswear and its cultural significance.

This year's gala was co-chaired by an impressive lineup including Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky, alongside Vogue's Anna Wintour. The star-studded red carpet saw over 200 celebrities in attendance, with notable appearances from Diana Ross, Rihanna, Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Teyana Taylor.

The exhibition and gala draw inspiration from Monica L. Miller's book "Slaves to Fashion" and explore the rich history of Black style. A companion book titled "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" has been released in conjunction with the exhibit, delving into the cultural significance of Black menswear from historical figures like Frederick Douglass to contemporary style icons such as Pharrell and the late Virgil Abloh.

The Mark Hotel served as the traditional departure point for many attendees, with celebrities like Ashley Graham, Cynthia Erivo, and Chris Rock photographed leaving the hotel en route to the museum. The annual fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute continues to be one of the most significant events in the fashion calendar, bringing together celebrities, designers, and cultural figures to celebrate fashion as art.
